A further three-year 50% rise from 2018 would take the airport to around 2.2 million by the end of 2020.
That would be great! It would definitely need another airline to base at the airport for that or maybe Ryanair to expand it's routes routes significantly. Ideally if the airport could get a Jet2 base and some more routes from Ryanair then it should do that. Flybe also have a key part to play. It depends on what aircraft they base in the future but there are many routes which only they'll be able to do regionally and in Europe. The future does at the moment look positive for CWL.

CAA Stats May 2017

Published today and show that the airport handled 147,200 passengers in the month, up 9.9% on May 2016. Rolling 12-month total was 1,384,492, up 8.6% on this time last year which was the same percentage rise for atms for May.

That's good news. The airport keeps on growing!
Just having a quick look through the stats now and i've noticed there is some good growth on some of the routes.
Paris CDG is up 22%, Verona is up 122% so looks like the extra flight is proving popular, Milan is up 29%, Rhodes is up 38%, Mahon is up 54%, Faro is up 50% and Dalaman is up 60% and Alicante is up 18%. Germany is down though MUC was down by 22% and BCN is down by 13%, i doubt the timing of the flights is helping that!

June figures are out from the airport. June 2017 was up 19% to 185,787 and the rolling year has gone over the 1.4 million mark significantly.

Cardiff Airport marks milestone passenger figures
The end of June 2017 marked some significant milestones for Wales’ national airport in terms of passenger numbers.

Passenger growth recorded for the month of June was 19% up versus the same month in 2016 – 185,787 passengers in total - enough to fill the Principality Stadium more than twice over.

June was also the busiest month in terms of passenger volume since Cardiff Airport came under ownership of the Welsh Government in 2013, taking the rolling year’s passenger figures way past the significant 1.4 million milestone.

As the city hosted the UEFA Champions League Final over the first weekend of June, Cardiff Airport saw over 21,000 additional fans flying through and an additional 380 aircraft movements on charter aircraft or regular scheduled airlines such as Vueling, Ryanair and Iberia Express.

Spencer Birns, Commercial Director of Cardiff Airport, said: “The first half of 2017 has seen a step change for Wales’ national airport. We’ve welcomed new airlines and our existing airline partners are reacting to increased market demand by adding new routes and extra capacity.

With Qatar Airways launching in 2018, we’ll be working with the airline to ensure this exciting service opens up new opportunities for customers in Wales and the South West as the region’s first direct link to a major Middle East airport hub, offering connections across Africa, Asia, Australia and more.”

Other highlights of 2017 so far:

  • Qatar Airways announced a new service to Doha, starting in 2018
  • Flybe launched new services to Rome and Guernsey
  • Iberia Express joined Cardiff Airport as a new airline, with a brand new service to Madrid
  • Spanish airline Vueling added more capacity on its regular scheduled services to Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga and Palma Majorca
  • Low cost carrier Ryanair doubled its services from Cardiff with new flights to Faro.
BACK TO NEWS

By my calculations the rolling yearly figure should be 1,488,370 for June.

By my calculations the rolling yearly figure should be 1,488,370 for June.
It won't be as high as that.

CAA stats show rolling 12-month total at the end of May 2017 as 1,384,492. In June 2016 CAA shows CWL handling 155,954 passengers so the 185,787 in June 2017 gives an additional 29,833 in that month. Adding 29,833 to May's 12-month rolling total gives a 12-month rolling total at the end of June of 1,414,325 (the higher June 2017 figure replaces the lower June 2016 figure in the 12-month calculations).

Thanks! Calculated it wrong! Sorry about that!

CWL has missed the stats release again for this batch of CAA stats for release on the 28th July (Yesterday). CWL's stats will now be published by the CAA on the 11th August.

Only one i can see so far is GCI carried 589 passengers.

CAA now has CWL stats for June AND for July with CWL being only a handful of airports released for July so far.

June 2017

184,969 passengers, up 18.6% on June 2016 with atms up 14.3%. Rolling 12-month total was 1,413,507, up 8.9% on a year ago. The European Cup Final boosted passenger numbers in June.

July 2017

171,605 passengers, up 4.7% on July 2016 with atms up 7.9%. Rolling 12-month total was 1,421,269, up 7.5% on a year ago.

August 2017

CAA stats show that 182,179 passengers used the terminal in the month, up 7.6% on August 2016. Atms also up 7.6%. Rolling 12-month total was 1,434,083, up 6.8% on a year ago.

So far as I can ascertain, and it looks correct, CWL's best ever calendar month was August 2007 when 264,451 passengers used the terminal. 2007 was also CWL's best ever calendar year with the airport seeing 2.093 million passengers.

Looks good for August! Good growth as well. 2018 should see it back over 200,000 again next August. Still a fair way to go to get back to 2007 numbers but it is going in the right direction.

August

Seems to have been a very good month, especially for the BE routes which all performed relatively well with some encouraging performances and load factors, as you might expect mind in the busiest month of the year, Only Guernsey hasn't really got going, will be surprised if this returns next summer. With a few gaps in the BE schedule for next year will be very interesting to see what develops over the coming months.

MAD with Iberia express has gotten off to a decent enough first season, hopefully an increase from 2 to 3 weekly , allowing for shorter breaks and also more brand awareness should improve the route next summer if indeed it returns

I was on one of the CDG flights and it has benefited from the time shift to the morning, Air France selling it on their website and there was quite a few family groups coming back from Disneyland and also lots of people had checked luggage so I'd have thought it would be a good earner for Flybe.
I'd be surprised if Rome doesn't go 3 weekly next year and maybe even Verona.
When I asked about Madrid on twitter the airport said it would be heavily advertised when it went back on sale.
Guernsey may be better off as 2 weekly.
I'm surprised Dusseldorf has done so well to be honest but it is good news.

BE will be absolutely over the moon with those stats, best stats they’ve achieved yet at CWL.
