An airline employee stole a Horizon Air, which is owned by Alaska Airlines, Q400 and took it for a joyride doing at least one loop the loop and was pursued by 2 USAF F15s. Sadly though the aircraft crashed in Puget Sound and it's believed the pilot was killed, there were no passengers onboard at the time.

Horrific news. Loosely termed "joyride" as the airline engineer who stole the aircraft told ATC he'd lost the plot. Condolences to his family and friends he's left behind.

Yes my condolences too, tragic news for his family.

I'm assuming pilots go through a mental health check now especially after the Germanwings insident but I'd be interested to know whether or not aircraft engineers go through a similar mental health check given most will know enough about aircraft to fly them even if they are not qualified to do so?

Our son-in-law's step-father was a ground engineer with a number of airlines at various times including BA and Continental, and he had a licence or some form of authorisation (I'm not sure what) that allowed him to taxi large commercial aircraft in connection with his job. I don't know if such procedures are still permitted. He retired several years ago.
