Manchester Airport continues to fly high
Manchester Airport has seen its busiest ever August with more than 3.1 million passengers using the UK’s third largest gateway last month.

It sees the airport’s annual rolling total reach 27.4m people, a year-on-year increase of 12%. The airport also recorded its busiest ever day on record on Friday 25th August, as more than 112,000 passengers passed through the three terminals.

During the summer school holidays, families from across the North were jetting off on their summer holidays. Mainland Spain and its islands were hugely popular this year with five of the top 10 destinations being Palma, Alicante, Malaga, Tenerife and Ibiza. Dubai and Orlando were popular destinations with those looking to go further afield.

The airport also unveiled the first part of its £1bn transformation programme as the summer holiday season came to an end. Some passengers passing through Terminal Two will now use a new temporary gate lounge that will allow the west half of Terminal Two to be completely demolished and rebuilt whilst the airfield remains in full operation. The new terminal building is expected to be operational by 2019.

Andrew Cowan, Manchester Airport CEO, said: “The summer is always the busiest time of year for us and this year we’ve seen another strong month of growth. As well as the usual sunshine routes, we’ve also seen growth to the USA, Middle East and Far East.

“August was also a hugely significant month for our £1bn transformation programme. The opening of the new gating lounge is the first major milestone for the project and passengers will now start to see the demolition of the west side of Terminal Two during the coming weeks and months.

“It’s a hugely exciting time for the airport and as we come into autumn we continue to work with our airline partners to plot how we will continue to grow in 2018.”

Cargo also increased last month with 12,027 tonnes carried, an increase of 22%, which sees the annual tonnage rise to 122,702.

MAG’s other airports also performed well last month. London Stansted Airport had its busiest ever summer, welcoming 2.7 million passengers to the airport during August, up 10% over the same month in 2016. East Midlands Airport grew by 2.5% to serve 611,000 passengers in July and Bournemouth Airport grew 2.7% to 86,000, with both airports seeing particularly strong performance on Spanish holiday routes.

Airport Press Release

Who produces these dreadful press releases? Useless rounded numbers as usual. Writing More than 3.1 million passengers uses far more ink / data than 3,166,042 passengers and tells us so much less. In fact, to statisticians these rounded figures are worse than useless.

Please, MAG ... we've left kindergarten now ... we are able to cope with the actual figures!!!

Going by comments in some of the other forums, the CAA figures often vary from the airports own figures for one reason of another so maybe it's done for that reason?

I'll do some quick average loads for key routes: (they may or may not be completely accurate ahaha!)
Muscat - Av. Load of 156
Riyadh - Av. Load of 181
Jeddah - Av. Load of 172
Beijing (daily?) - Av. Load of 174
Houston - Av. Load of 162
Singapore - Av. Load of 179
Hong Kong - Av. Load of 268
San Francisco - Av. Load of around 225-232 depending on sectors operated
Atlanta - Av. Load of 182
EWR/PHL/JFK/LAX/LAS/BOS all up
ATL/ORD down slightly
Toronto - Av. Load of 235
Vancouver - Av. Load of 285

Thanks for that Ethan.

For CX, the LF is a remarkable 95.6% on the 280 seat A359.

On SQ, I actually made it 175 on SIN and 166 on IAH based on 45 sectors each - but your numbers could well be right. These numbers do not include through pax SIN-IAH-SIN. So, in broad terms, the MAN-SIN-MAN pax figure represents just under 70% of the total seat capacity of 253 seats per sector, and IAH-MAN-IAH about 65%.

Hainan with an Av. Load of 174 would be a LF of 81.6% if all flights were on the 213 seat B788s. But were they?

On the US routes, ATL was very disappointing, down 11% with a LF of only 69%.
ORD was down 3% with an Av. Load of 139. Poor if all flights were B763s. Only 79% LF even if they had been all B757s.
Good to see EWR increase 8% but is a LF of 81.7% all that great for July compared to a few years ago?
(I appreciate the impact of extra capacity to NY).
And PHL up 3%, but an Av. Load of 164 is only a LF of 63.7% assuming all flights operated and if all were A332s.
On the brighter side, LAS was up 50% and LAX 64%. In fact, the LAX pax figure of 8,744 seems incredibly high if there were only 3 flights per week by TCX.

Are we able to work out the load factor for TCX to LAX and a blended load factor for TCX/VS to SFO? Difficult to tell how VS are doing vis a vis TCX, but it will be interesting to see what happens next.

Re UA, I think they have been quite counter seasonal. Their summer numbers take a hit from the addition of TCX, AA, VS capacity - it will be interesting to see if they can pick up some of AA's traffic (you can see why they want to bolster PHL and ORD).

I wonder if TCX (and others - but primarily TCX due to the Condor connection) can make hay from Air Berlin's demise.

I like the one passenger from Bogota! I assume this is the mother getting off the LH flight which was diverted due to her child being born mid-flight! Nice story if so!

I wonder if TCX (and others - but primarily TCX due to the Condor connection) can make hay from Air Berlin's demise.
10 of Air Berlins A330 200s were taken back by the lessor AerCap so i'm wondering if TCX could pick up a couple of them to keep their expansion going.

Perhaps pinching some of their passengers as well Jerry...

Good news is TXC have an incremental approach to expansion, and seem to have spare airframe capacity in S18. If they take a frame or two, from wherever, it should be a positive sign of their intentions.

Are we able to work out the load factor for TCX to LAX and a blended load factor for TCX/VS to SFO?

I think Flights to LAX are Mon/Wed/Sat, so 4 weeks to Fri. 28Jul would give 24 sectors plus Sat. out and Sun. return, and then just Mon. out. I make that 27 sectors, which at 322 seats per flight would give 8,694 total.
This is odd as the pax figure shown is 8,744.

Any thoughts? Were there any extra flights or did TCX use a/c with more seats? Or were there at least 50 babies if these are included (but no seat required) and the flights jammed full?

Or have I just screwed up the calculations?

As regards SFO, I think Ethan calculated about 230 Av. Load. Is it 3 x weekly for VS (264 seats) and 2 x weekly for TCX (322 seats)? If so, I make the overall LF 80.6% if I've got the days of operation right, but I'm open to correction.

It certainly seems as though TCX's LAX flights are full. Perhaps the high summer they ran 4x weekly? If so haven't noticed.

Would explain why they are looking at 4x weekly in a regular basis next summer.

Extraordinary that we have around 19,000 passengers to LAX and SFO and these routes didn't exist a year or two ago...

I'm not sure of Air Transat's A330 occupations, but Vancouver also seems to be strong in this month and last month's statistics. Surely room for a fourth weekly rotation, or a return of Calgary?

Toronto also seems decent (with AC Rouge 763, TS 313 and 332).

I would love to see AC do what they have done in Shannon/Dublin today. 5x weekly 788 in summer, 5x weekly 7M8 in winter mainline would be very good for the Canadian market ex. Manchester.

YVR and YYZ are probably worth working out at some stage - the numbers look strong.

I am staggered AC aren't operating mainline to MAN from YYZ. I'm less sure of the market to YVR, but there must be a strong (if seasonal) O&D market to Toronto, with good onward connections to north America.

August stats out. Some quick east calcs.

Beijing - 195
Muscat - 170
Riyadh - 224
Jeddah - 189
Hong Kong - 252
Singapore - 175

Obviously, Houston is going to have to be worked out on when Hurricane Harvey scuppered the airport's operations.

Also noticed that whilst ISB is down (no Shaheen) - LHE is up.

Vancouver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Newark, JFK, Philly, Las Vegas, Sanford all up. Orlando, Chicago, Atlanta, Toronto slightly down.

Riyadh obviously a strong route, so, would not be surprised to see that return in a wider form.

The Oman air loads are very strong, just as the UK manager said was expected.

Beijing remains the odd one out, I expected better.....

Obviously, Houston is going to have to be worked out on when Hurricane Harvey scuppered the airport's operations.

The final IAH sector in August 2017 was IAH-MAN, arriving on Saturday 26 August. Thereafter the flight terminated at MAN, waited 24 hours, and returned to SIN.

IAH returned on 1 September.

Hope this helps!!

JFK seems huge.

Are we able to work out the number of sectors flown on these routes (and therefore work out an average load and possibly load factor)
