Mostly Shorts 360's if I remember correctly, flew EMA-LHR as well

I think British Midland took the Heathrow route over when they did a route swop with BA, Midland took Heathrow and other routes that I can't recall, while BA took over the Brussels and Frankfurt routes using 1-11s

BMA operated Viscounts, Heralds, 360s and I think F27s. BA/BEA operated Dc3s, Viscounts Vanguards and probably DH Rapids way back. At least once a Trident which would have done the trip in about 5 minutes. I also recall that on a diversion day a BOAC 707 did the BHX/LHR run on it's repositioning flight.

I flew the route twice as a kid on spotting trips Viscount and Vanguard.

I remember flying on this Monarch DC10 to Orlando Sandford as a kid. We had a massive delay going out and I can remember the whole plane smelling of a toilet! Monarch really will be missed... And also, what a beast the DC10 was!
I went on a Laker DC10 from Gatwick to New York...loved it had never been on such a big plane.

Me too! I can even remember the date 12 April 1974. The aircraft was DC-10-10 G-AZZD 'Western Belle'. I was 10 years old and managed to get myself a flightdeck visit.
I also remember the meal being very good. I had a steak!

I probably have somewhere, but my record keeping wasn't that great so pining a photo down to a year isn't easy.
If there is anything in particular that you are interested, I'll have a look through what I've got - may take a while though as I'm sure I've got more photos stashed away somewhere.

Kevin
I worked at the airport from April - Sep for MAS check in duties and Dep/Arr escort duties, the times I have put air bridges on anything from Ryanair Bac 1-11 to Highland Express B747, some difference.
Anything from this period would be great.

Ah, that's why you are so specific. Nothing wrong with that.

Nah, Simon. I don't like those...I love them!

A wonderful selection of photos from BHX past. They bring back so many memories.
I'm certain, that you, me and others from the BHX forum must have been at the airport on the same days.

Cheers

Kevin

Remember the Qantas B747 our first jumbo, if Im right they had to send down to Heathrow for a steps extension, as our present steps where not tall enough, might be wrong but Im sure somone told me that at the drome.

Great photos again Kevin although the one showing Britannia, Dan Air BMA, Cymru and of course Monarch aircraft is rather poignant as none of those airlines exist now although Britannia's now Tui of course.

Recall it? I flew on it!
My Dad was giving a friend a lift to LHR, so I was dropped off at BHX and bought a standby ticket with BMA to LHR. I then met my Dad on top of the multi storey at LHR had a day watching the planes and a lift home.
In my case, the flight was due to be operated by a Viscount, but this went 'tech'. It was substituted with a DC9-14.
There were two unusual things with this flight. First, just after we'd levelled out after the climb the engines went to full power and the aircraft climbed steeply. I looked out of the window to see a Britannia B737-200 pass directly beneath us and not much lower than us - I never found out whether the incident was reported.

The second was that I noticed a lad of a similar age to myself (I was about 18) sitting on his own a couple of rows forward from me. When I met my Dad on the car park, I saw the same lad with someone I assumed was his Dad. I went over and said hello, explaining that I'd seen him on the flight from BHX. It turned out he was doing the same as me. Buying a cheap ticket, flying to LHR for a days spotting, meeting his Dad and driving home. Strange co-incidence!
I also remember Herald G-ATIG shuttling back and forth between BHX and LHR. Later, I think the service was operated by a Dash-8 (Eurocity Express?)

Kevin

That Herald rings a bell, I think it was later owned by Janus Airways, if it was I flew on it from Lydd to Beauvais. I have an idea Brymon had that aircraft also at one time and used it from NQY to LHR. Could be wrong though !!!

Talking of Laker DC10s we were booked to fly to MIA from MAN in October 1982 when they went bust with a little help from BA and Pan Am so we re booked With BA from LHR on a 747 to make matters worse we had a connecting flight to Orlando with Air Florida who managed to direct the passengers to the wrong gate, remarkably the plane went without us but our luggage went.

They put us on a Northwest 727 and in the end we were only about 2 hrs late And they had collected our luggage and layed on free transport to our hotel so in the end came out with credit in my opinion. Can't see Ryanair et all doing that then again Air Florida went bust as well shortly afterwards.

As an aside there were no direct flights to Orlando at that time from the U.K.

I was lucky enough to fly on Lakers DC10s twice as a lad, firstly LGW-JFK-LGW, that went fine. Secondly it should have been Gatwick to Tampa return, except when we all got to the check in at Gatwick, the flight was over booked, and we were sent to Miami. My dad then drove us all to Tampa through the night....very tiring trip ! We did fly from Tampa on the return, but I noticed the aircraft was a DC10-10, not a DC10-30, no middle wheel in undercarriage gave it away. Told my parents this plane hasn't the range to fly non stop to the UK. They didn't believe me, until it was announced we were going via Halifax Nova Scotia !

Just in case anybody isn't aware we have our own forum gallery. We have a Birmingham Aviation Photography Gallery for photos taken recently and a Elmdon Airport Gallery for the more Nostalgic pictures you want to share.

It's really easy to upload them here. Here's how to upload them: http://www.forums4airports.com/help/uploadphotos/

Here's how to post your images right here in the forums:

Uploading images as attachments is fine but they will eventually get lost in the system as they don't appear in the gallery. Eventually they will be deleted in forum clean-ups.
