If you think about it there is only one airline at LBA who don’t like airbridges and that’s Ryanair.

Of the others;

Jet2 YES
Tui YES
Thomas Cook Yes
BA Yes
KLM Yes

Aer Lingus No but would if it were ever upgraded to mainline then Yes.

Likewise any potential new operators using the right equipment LH, IB, SN, TK, AF, EK, QR, PK etc would definitely use them.

I very much hope this is the first stage in a future proofing program for LBA.

:wtf:

I would like to hope that this eastward terminal extension is merely phase 1 of significant improvements. Ideally, phase 2 would consist of continuing to build westward in front of the current curved building. Phase 3 would be to demolish the current building (sorry !), control tower and all the tents and metal prefabs and concrete over to provide more apron space. Needless to say a new control tower would have to be provided. It would be a sad day to lose two very distinctive British airport buildings but that is one of the prices of progress. And this assumes they aren't listed.

I would certainly relocate the Fire Station southside. The existing terminal and all its add-ons has, in my opinion, had its day and needs removing. Make its footprint into extra apron space and build to the north of the site, to link with the proposed eastward building. Hope that makes sense.

As for a replacement Control Tower, this is something that the Head of ATC would obviously be tasked with. Perhaps southside facing north would be a possibility.

I too would re-locate the Fire Station and also remove the existing buildings now occupying part of the apron - I think used for a baggage carousel- so maybe the planned eastern extension will allow this to happen. Would be good to have the whole apron back in use.

In addition to the new Eastern extension, it is still the intention to switch to a single check in, hall, rather than Hall A and B as we have now, and the single check in will be at the western end of the terminal. As I have previously reported, that will mean major reconfiguration of that end of the terminal which will be feasible only if the current fire station is relocated, and when international arrivals is relocated to the new terminal extension. So I imagine phase 1 is the eastern extension and phase two, the relocation of the fire station and then internal reconfiguration of all that end in order to provide a single, large check in area, with direct access from there up to duty free and the departure lounges above. This will obviously entail the provision of a new baggage screening area too, so it is fair to say that the works carried out at that end will be far from minor. I cannot see a new tower any time soon. The current tower can see all areas of the airfield unobstructed and remember they have just spent a small fortune a couple of years ago installing all the latest equipment into it.

Talking of expansion isn’t it about time the airport had a proper full service on site hotel. I work in the hotel business for Accor Hotels( Sofitel, Novotel, Mercure, Ibis) and we often accommodate air crews in Leeds at my hotel (Novotel) because there is nowhere suitable near the airport. Air crews will not stay in Travelodge/Premier Inns etc. They need 24hour room service, on site restaurant etc. Having a quick look on google maps virtually all airports the size of LBA and smaller have full service hotels on site.
NCL... Hilton Double Tree and Britannia
EMA...Radisson Blu, Jury’s, Holiday Inn
NWI....Holiday Inn
BRS...Hampton by Hilton
EXT...Hampton by Hilton
LPL...Hampton by Hilton
HUY...Hampton by Hilton
DSA...Ramada Encore
CWL...Holiday Inn
All of the above are walking distance to the terminal or offer comp shuttle buses.

At CWL I'm pretty sure that the KLM crews don't use the Holiday Inn. I think they use the Copthorne at Culverhouse Cross about a 15 minute drive away not sure about Qatar crews though I'd have thought they'd be the same. Having a hotel within walking distance of the terminal is probably more of a plus for business passengers rather than crew especially if it's a full service one.

The Clayton (previously Bewley's and Holiday Inn Garden Court) at Manchester Airport is very smart. We already have a Clayton in Leeds centre so perhaps a Marriott or Radisson ?

The only major equipment replaced was the radar display system, this could easily be moved. I'd think any new tower would be virtual. A mast on the airfield with cameras on it and ATC sat in a room which could be anywhere, just like what is currently being installed at London City

Not keen on the idea of a remote tower. Liverpool provides radar for Doncaster but I didn't know you could do the same for tower, what happens when there's a failure?

Keen or not it's the future!. Been done in Norway for remote airfields and like I said is currently been installed for Lon City see this https://www.nats.aero/news/london-c...-uks-first-digital-air-traffic-control-tower/ I can't personally see this level of investment at LBA but if they ever decided to use the existing tower space for something else this would be the way to do it

In my past life I was cabin crew for bmi based at LHR. If we nightstopped at LBA we stayed at Weetwood Hall or the Holiday Inn at Bramhope which is now the Britannia. Now working in the Hotel industry the Britannia chain of hotels don’t have the best reputation. Just before Christmas I was on duty at the Novotel when we unexpectedly had a group booking for 7 rooms appear on our systems. An hour later a Small Planet crew turned up to check in. They were originally booked into the Britannia but after an hour there the Captain asked his ops team to rebook them into another Hotel. He said it was quite simply the worst hotel they had ever been booked into.

I know that the currently based Titan flight crews are based at Weetwood Hall as their crew vehicle, complete with Titan titles on the door, is standing outside on an evening, as it was the last time Titan based their 757 here. I wouldn't be surprised to find other crews staying there too, but they do use the Britannia at Bramhope, which is only a 5 minute drive from LBA, and there is also the Parkway at Lawnswood (can't remember which chain are the latest to own this one!) and I think that the Chevin Lodge Hotel is also used. I do agree that a full service hotel is needed at LBA and I do seem to recall that if/when the airport village is built behind the Avro factory, it was the intention that such a hotel would be included.

Not sure with LBA limited business travel this type of hotel viable. In addition not sure why crews need a full service hotel to stay in. Today its possible to order in every possible service to your hotel, food, drink, entertainment, far more options then the hotel can provide..
Stay in premier inns all over the country and the only three services I require outside the room food, (dont like premier inns food options), pool and the gym are available 24/7 in virtually every city, whereas in most hotels restrictions on the hours you can obtain these services. 10 days ago in a 5 star london hotel costing £300 a night, no hot food after 1am, pool or gym restricted hours, concierge gave us the name of the restaurant they used for hot food after 1am, delivered within 30 minutes..
Were in a 24/7 age, its hard for a hotel to cover all aspects and maintain a sensible price

Passed through the terminal today. New Starbucks had huge queue so avoided that but sign of success at least .

Couldn't really tell what difference any new benches were making, didn't seem many new ones especially considering the benches lost outside new lounge entrance area.

However did feel a lot more spacious and modern so roll on next improvements.

Not sure if they are all installed yet, but LBA purchased an additional 500 seats in total. Assuming there are around 5 seats per bench, there are, or will be, an additional 50 benches scattered around the terminal, most of which should be adjacent to the new Starbucks.

hi white heather
went out of LBA on sunday 17 of june to malaga, had a walk around the terminal to count the seating, there were 287 seats in total not attached to bars or cafe etc.
regards
sm1

Some of these benches have been placed in the corridor down to immigration. I saw them last month when I flew back in from Amsterdam. Due to travel out of LBA over the weekend so will be interesting to see the new Starbucks and seating area.
