Would be remiss not to mention BA have yet again cancelled one of our early shuttles :)
They really are an utter shambles trading on past glory!

Airport welcomes new agreement on China flights
Manchester Airport has welcomed news of a “landmark agreement” to allow more direct services between the UK and China.

The Department for Transport has announced there will be 50% increase in the number of permitted weekly flights, from 100 to 150.

And the creation of extra capacity is aimed at stimulating direct connectivity to and from airports outside of London, which the DfT says “allows for a huge expansion in routes.”

The news comes after report into the economic impact of Hainan Airlines’ service to Beijing revealed it had driven an uplift in trade, tourism and inward investment, as well as boosting the North’s universities.

Compiled by economic consultancy Steer Davies Gleeve, the study showed that:

- UK export values from Manchester Airport have increased 265% to £200m per month since the Hainan Airlines service started;

- A visitor spend of £140m, which is more than double the value expected prior to the launch;

- 40% more people in the North are now travelling to China than prior to the commencement of the route;

- Passenger volumes are 15% higher than predicted;

- Manchester’s inward investment pipeline has doubled in 12 months;

- International student numbers at Manchester University have grown at twice the national average

The report was also launched in China by a ministerial delegation from the UK Government in Shanghai to promote trade and investment opportunities in the Northern Powerhouse.

Led by Trade Minister Baroness Fairhead and Northern Powerhouse Minister Jake Berry, the group met with prospective investors and trading partners at the China International Industry Fair.

Manchester Airport also has a direct route to Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific, which was increased to a daily route earlier this week due to the success it has enjoyed in the three years since launching.

Andrew Cowan, CEO of Manchester Airport, said: “Our connections to both Beijing and Hong Kong have led to significantly higher volumes of exports and inward investment, while the North’s universities have benefited from increased international student numbers and research collaborations with Chinese institutions.

“Importantly, the routes have stimulated brand new demand for travel between the UK and China, which among other things has delivered a huge boost to the visitor economy across the North.”

The announcement builds on successful discussions in October 2016 that saw limits on passenger flights between the two countries raised from 40 per week to a maximum of 100.

The number of Chinese tourists visiting the UK has rocketed during the first half of this year. Between January and June, 115,000 visits were made from China to the UK, a rise of 47% on the same period last year. Spending also increased to £231 million, up 54%.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: “These agreements are an important part of preparing Britain for a post-Brexit world and making sure we have access to key markets in the Far East, and they come at a time when our exports are growing and we continue to attract international investment. It just underlines that Britain will do well regardless of the outcome of the Brexit negotiations.

“The whole government is working to secure the best possible future relationship with the EU, and great progress has been made this week, but no one should believe that Britain’s future success depends on decisions taken in Brussels.”

Rhys Whalley, Executive Director of the Manchester China Forum, said: “It is clear that direct connectivity to high growth markets like China is key to the success of the Northern Powerhouse vision and the creation of a balanced UK economy.

“The services from Manchester to Hong Kong and Beijing have already delivered wide-ranging economic and social benefits and further strengthened relations between the North and China.

“As highlighted earlier this week during the UK-China People to People Dialogue, delivering enhanced connectivity outside of our capital cities will be critical in driving growth and engagement with key growth markets in a post-Brexit era. This UK-China bilateral agreement paves the way for new direct services between the North and other Chinese cities to be established, which will help deliver even greater volumes of trade, tourism and investment.”

Manchester Airport continues to speak with airlines about the launch of new services to additional Chinese cities.

That last paragraph leaves things
"a bit in the air....."

I would have thought " the talks/ any talks" were well advanced by now unless certain airlines provaricate ?

I had hoped for better than a BA situation where back in the day objection after objection stifled the life out of an enthusiastic approach!

Dual runway operations continue over the forthcoming holiday period with the exception of Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

Gentlemen, and ladies, this has really got nothing to do with the aspirations of the Manchester General Thread. As such I will shortly be moving the discussion on Heathrow and Gatwick over to the "Outside Influence" thread where you may happily continue to debate the subject.

Magical day out for Manchester Arena families
Families affected by the Manchester Arena attack will have a magical Christmas day out with one of the country’s funniest men when they jet off with British Airways from Manchester Airport to Disneyland Paris with John Bishop today (December 19).

Some of the youngsters who were at the Arena, or were affected by the events in May, are being treated to a day to remember with Liverpool comedian John and some of the cast from Chester-based soap Hollyoaks.

They will be welcomed on board a special early morning Christmas charter flight from Manchester Airport to Paris where they will be met by two more famous faces, Michelle Keegan and Mark Wright, for a fun-filled day at Disneyland Paris.

This is the fifth time British Airways and Disneyland Paris have teamed up to organise a magical day out, but it’s the first time the flight has operated from Manchester Airport.

The trip is part of British Airways’ celebrations to mark the airline reaching a landmark £17 million raised for Flying Start, its global charity partnership with Comic Relief since 2010. The money raised has helped Comic Relief fund projects in the UK and around the world, including the Youth Factory Zone in Manchester who are also sending 10 youngsters on the trip.

Mary Barry, British Airways’ community investment manager, said: “We wanted to give some of the families a Christmas day out, to have fun and meet some of our celebrity ambassadors. We are very grateful to Disney for agreeing to work with us once again and to all the celebrities for giving their time to come with us.”

Julian Carr, Manchester Airport’s Aviation Director, said: “We are delighted to see British Airways undertake its first Christmas charter flight from Manchester Airport, for such a worthwhile cause.

“The arena attack touched so many people back in May and everyone at Manchester Airport hopes the families have an incredible day at Disneyland Paris.”

British Airways and Disneyland Paris have been working with the Red Cross and Love Manchester to identify which families to take on the trip.

Community outreach and charitable giving has been a priority activity for Disneyland Paris since the resort opened in 1992. Disney magic is shared through the Disney VoluntEARS programme, whereby employees donate their time and talents to others through outreach events. In total, 755 Disney VoluntEARS gave over 4,332 hours to community service in 2017. The same year, Disneyland Paris offered its support to more than 300 different European associations, with over 1,000 community outreach events organised and supported every year including onsite day events, wishes granted to children, and visits to medical centres.

Annabel Altmann, Senior Manager of Disneyland Paris Corporate Citizenship, said “We are proud to be partnering with British Airways for a fifth year in a row, giving over 50 people from Manchester a fantastic day trip before Christmas and helping to support Flying Start.”

I'm amazed we havn't had a .....

" 200,000 in airport holiday getaway" yet.

This tedious MEN headline must be "holding" somewhere around the Manchester area. :)

Awake early so paid a visit to T2 between 08.00 and 09.30. Great to see Hainan and Saudia (as User mentioned) so busy at check-in. SQ (mainly for the SIN sector at the time) & CX were no more than steady, while VS looked as if they had no shortage of passengers for their 2 MCO flights. Appeared to be lots of Chinese students for PEK.

Afraid I must berate MAN though for their performance on the infamous travelators. There are 20 sections between T1 and T2 (i.e.10 each way) and by my reckoning only 12 were working. Of the 8 that were static, 3 were down for maintenance with the usual apology notice - seems to be a permanent state for those 3), but the other 5 were just switched off. The energy conservation King at MAN is evidently alive and well and on duty, and perhaps having a laugh at passengers expense on one of the busiest days in winter?? It's no joke though and MAN really ought to get a grip.

Had a quick chat with a CX rep in their concourse office and he said they were pleased with the daily flights as they provide greater connecting opportunities. Didn't really respond when I suggested an evening flight would provide even more!

Ah yes

"Manchester Airport braces for Christmas rush " is another :)

It's definitely inbound from somewhere!

Absolute shed load of movements Christmas Day with a I guess traffic every 15 minutes in /out?

Even the BA shuttle have a couple of flights amazeballs!

Happy Christmas

Who'd have thought a Zambian article would feature here! Let's target a route to Lusaka so that people can enjoy a nostalgic trip to see "their" DC10.

"But tucked away outside the far side of the car park is what is left of the glory days of Zambia’s aviation heritage. It sits somewhat forlorn, but with an eerie sense of the memories and stories, the triumphs, hopes and downturns, of an almost forgotten era."

What one company states as being the top 10 Christmas destinations based on bookings. The blurb states:

"Traveltek's list of top 10 Christmas destinations is based on flight booking data from the travel technology firm's vast client database, which includes the majority of independent travel agencies across the UK, as well as travel companies in several international markets. It covers all flight bookings out of major UK airports between December 18th and 24th 2017, while data on London airports, Scottish airports, Manchester Airport and several international air hubs have also been compiled to determine specific booking patterns for each market."

This is MAN's list:
New York
Tenerife
Miami
Barcelona
Amsterdam
Dubai
Faro
Lanzarote
Malta
Fuerteventura

The surprise for me in that list is Miami. Were there any direct scheduled flights or cruise charters, or would they be pax connecting via another hub?

Good to see New York up there.

There may have been the odd cruise charter but I doubt it would have attracted large numbers to get it into the top 10! It's a curious situation. TCX did summer ops but dropped it in favour of Seattle. AA have had 3 lots of winter-only services but dropped it. If only we could see the booking pattern per month for the past 2 to 3 years so that some kind of informed speculation could be made for frequency/type.

My take is that I wouldn't be too surprised that there may be enough demand for an A321 capacity aircraft 3 times a week but there's no actual current aircraft available that could operate it. It may well be that passengers will have to continue to route over JFK/BOS/PHL until such times that we can get the numbers to fill A330/A350/787s without having to resort to dropping fares to fill capacity.

I suspect that the compiler has simply read South and Central Florida lumped as Miami and included those routing via our healthy Orlando services with car hire and other transfers.

For whatever reason ( Orlando mainly ) Miami hasn’t really worked since the days of good ol’ and for ever going bust Freddy Lakers empire.Back then the attraction of the swamp really were alligators and hover boats !

Frankly there is nothing that attractive about the place other that the strip and sand isn’t everything imho.

And given relatively poor need to use the main transfer opportunities to Central and Southern America’s what with the horrible US approach to transiting these never materialise in sufficient numbers to support the middle cabins - American found this out !

Don’t much like the swamp and humidity either myself but that just personal as family has a house in Florida and my sister is there right now

Wasn't MIA summer seasonal by TCX?

Seems odd. I'd have thought MIA (and CPT) would be ideal winter seasonal routes for the downtime when the likes of LAX, SFO are not operating.

Fear of flying tackled by British Airways course at Manchester Airport

WHILE most of us would agree that flying is not the highlight of any holiday, for some it can put a stop to relaxing getaways altogether.

Read story: http://www.middlewichguardian.co.uk...british-airways-course-at-manchester-airport/

I had to chuckle when I read that. In my days working at LBA I remember a similar fear of flying course where the flight was due to operate and the wind was blowing a gale. The passengers spent a couple of hours in the departure lounge watching incoming aircraft wobbling on their approach into Leeds with some aircraft going around. I've never seen so many people leave one of these courses without actually getting on an aircraft. #fearofflying
