Mold Remediation and Surface Removal Decontamination process in the temporary Arrival and Baggage Claim area
Simpson Bay, St. Maarten (Wednesday September 5, 2018) – The Mold Remediation and Surface Removal Decontamination process is underway at the terminal building of the Princess Juliana International Airport - SXM. The scope of the work will also include the installation of HEPA air filtration units and portable humidifiers to dry any remaining wet building materials.

The Texas-based company, BMS CAT International, was awarded the contract to carry out the mold remediation work, as the terminal building sustained severe damages following the 2017 hurricanes. During this process, the company will clean all the mold contaminated items on the ground floor of the airport.

The Terminal Reconstruction project includes, “Package One,” the first phase of which is the remediation method. It also encompasses the cleaning of filters, light fixtures and any item that has remained in the terminal building after the internal demolition.

The Mold Remediation and Surface Removal Decontamination project has also contributed towards the employment of over 50 local workers.

The Managing Board has declared that the project is on schedule. It is the intention to have a seamless transfer of the Departure and Arrival Operations to the ground floor of the Terminal Building in November 2018. The SXM Airport will offer Wi-Fi services and be fully airconditioned.

The completion of “Package One,” is much anticipated as the peak season for passenger traffic at SXM Airport is from December 15 to April 15 (Winter Season). Despite normal seasonality, the numbers of SXM departing passengers are increasing as St. Maarten/St. Martin tourism recovers from the hurricanes of 2017. For instance, in June 2016 SXM departing passengers were 62% of what they were in March 2016, but in 2018, the June average daily passenger volume was 106% of March 2018. This change reflects the ongoing restoration of hotel & time share rooms and the influence it has on SXM passenger volumes. In June 2018 there were 26 commercial airlines serving SXM with 22 catering to passengers and 4 for the carriage of cargo.

It's a webcam on top of the bar at the end of the runway and has to be one of the best I've seen. It gets quiet at times but if you stick with it then it's well worth it, the camera often moves to track the aircraft. It also offers ATC if you click at the top of the screen.

That's great, I love it! I so want to go to Princess Juliana International Airport, it's on my lifetime todo list.

I probably won't be able to afford to go until I'm an old croney doing a P&O cruise.

It's brilliant isn't it?

I'm with you on SXM, I'd also love to go.

The webcam is also pretty good in darkness. Last night I kept it on just listening to the sound of the ocean. Sad eh?!

5000 posts :drinks:  :yahoo: :clapping:

It's amazing to see so many widebodied aircraft using St Maarten with a runway around the same length as that at LBA in the UK.

What's wrong with being an old croney and going on a P&O Cruise? :hatsoff:

I was waiting for somebody to take the bait. Hook line and sinker!

My parents did just that a couple of years back.(P&O Cruise around the Caribbean) I said did you go to the beach to watch the aircraft, they knew about a famous airport runway close to a beach, but didn't realise it was right there, unbelievable! :search:

Has anybody tried a simulator landing into St Maarten? I've mastered it on both ends, I'm not sure if landing on runway 28 over the mountain is normally permitted though?

KLM had it's last ever 747 flight from Amsterdam to St. Maarten yesterday. The route will now be served using A330 equipment operating direct. Previously the 747 service had operated via Curacao.

A video of it's departure.

I'm still amazed at the traffic this place gets, especially given the runway length which is about the same as that at LBA! #StMaartenSpotting

There has been some discussion in the travel industry over whether a dangerous plane spotting practice in St. Maarten should come to a halt following the recent death of a New Zealand tourist on Maho Beach.

Forbes reported last week that the popular St. Maarten tourist attraction of plane spotting on the famous Maho Beach could eventually come to an end following the tragedy.

I sincerely hope not. There are risks with everything we do in life. It was just very unfortunate accident.

I think we can say this with a fair amount of certainty that the New Zealand tourist was fully aware of the risks she was taking when she plonked herself on the Maho Beach beach less than 80m from the end of the St Maarten runway. #stmaarten #planespotting

Should plane spotting be stopped at the airport?

No as you say there are risks in every aspect of life, we are going on a caribean cruise later this year and will be visiting St Martin no prizes for guessing where I want to go trouble is the wife wants to visit the French part of the island and as she is fed up with all our holidays involving aeroplanes?

Still I've a flight on the 787 from BHX look forward to and 3 months to think of a plan ,suggestions welcome however divorce is not an option ( too expensive ).

By the way I would never stand directly behind the jet blast just asking for trouble.

The Health & Safety Brigade is everywhere. One of my regular expressions is that life is a risk. Out and out reckless behaviour should be curbed if only to protect some people against themselves, but I wouldn't put watching these aircraft land, even at fairly close quarters, in that category.

Sane adults have a responsibility to themselves and to any young children and other vulnerable people for whom they are responsible.

In Bristol and Bath during the past year or so something like 8 or 9 young men have drowned in the waterways in these cities. Apart from dopey conspiracy theories about a phantom pusher at large the main discussion revolves around trying to ensure that something is done to prevent further recurrences. Some demand that the entire river and harbour scape in these cities be fenced in. That would be similar to putting a fence along the edge of every pavement in the cities to prevent people wandering into the road and being killed.

There are four running themes in most, perhaps all the deaths: young men; early hours of the morning; a night out; booze.

I have every sympathy for their loved ones but the deceased were all adults who should not have needed the state to hold their hand at every turn.

It should come as no surprise but this is the signage used at St Maarten warning people about the dangers of jet blast. It's strange as people always seem to think signs like this are referring to "they","them","you","your" or "those" as opposed to "I","me","we" or "us".
