The airport has now issued a press release regarding the off-site car park fiasco last weekend. They make the point that airport onsite car parks can be relied upon. It's a nice little 'promo' but I think it is entirely valid.

Car Park Update

Created: 9th Apr 2018

Please read our advice following the difficulties passengers have experienced recently with an off-site car parking provider unconnected with Bristol Airport.

We are aware of a number of passengers experiencing difficulties in contacting an off-site car parking provider on their return to Bristol Airport over the weekend (Friday 6 April – Sunday 8 April) and the situation is ongoing.

Absolutely Secure Airport Parking Bristol is an independent business entirely unconnected with Bristol Airport. While we have no control nor influence over the services provided by Absolutely Secure Airport Parking Bristol, our Ground Transportation team and on-site Police unit provided assistance to passengers affected to help locate their vehicles.

For peace of mind when flying from Bristol Airport passengers are advised to use the range of on-site car parking options available. All of our car parks are located on site, are equipped with CCTV, automatic number plate recognition, and are served by a courtesy bus to and from the terminal operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Passengers can guarantee their vehicle will be parked on site in an official Bristol Airport car park by booking via our web site (www.bristolairport.co.uk).

So, the new multi-storey car park opens next Monday with 20% off bookings when entering the code MSCP18 on their website. I have to admit when I was there a few weeks ago it looked a long way from being completed.

I can’t wait until the whole area where the current gravel-covered long-stay car park area is multi-storey. It’s current state gives a very poor impression to visitors and I’ve never been to another airport with a car park anything like it.

I'm not sure the entire current long-stay surface car park is intended to be replaced by MSCPs. I agree that the gravel-covered surface is far from ideal and has attracted regular criticism from many users down the years.

Can anyone confirm that the planning rules stipulate that the MSCP can only be used between 1 May and 31 Oct after which it has to be shut?

Saw a notein the prune site with no context to the attachment.

Seems silly if true.

I thought that restriction was for the extension of the car park on the south side, so that it's only used during peak time and otherwise punters are forced into the MSCP.

Absolutely correct. The MSCP is operational throughout the year but the extension to the Silver Zone car park on the Southside on land known as Cogloop can only be used between 1 May and 31 October each year on condition that the MSCP is open and available to the travelling public for car parking.

That was part of the reason for getting the MSCP finished in early May this year.

When I've been at the airport in recent times the top floor of the MSCP doesn't seem well used. I don't know about the other floors.

The cost of parking in the new multi storey car-park isnt very helpful, a few days works out to just over £100 which costs more than the flights!
Totally agree. The introductory offer was a 25% discount, which still made it more expensive than Short Stay with the standard 10% discount on dates I was looking at.

I know BRS wants to compete with LHR - well it certainly is on the price of parking!

I agree, the price of parking at BRS has been outrageous for many years, especially given the inconvenience of the cheapest Silver zone option and the poor quality of the main long stay car park.

Your post prompted me to do a comparison. Weekend 6-8 July 2018, arr 1300, dep 2100.
BRS £39.99 SZ, £48.99 LS. £56.99 SS, £62.99 MSCP, £73.99 Premier
LHR T2 £43.70 LS with transfer bus, but you do park your own vehicle and keep your keys. £74 Short stay at terminal.
BHX £38.99 Car park 5 ("10 minute walk"), £44.99 Car park 4 ("5 minute walk"). Again, you park your own vehicle and keep your keys. £52 Car park 1 Multi-storey at terminal, amendable and refundable rate! I don't park at BHX as I have family in B'ham where I leave the car and get a lift, but I believe all car parks at BHX are tarmac.

It does indeed look as if BRS is at or above the prices of its competitors. Silver zone is a poor option given that they insist upon keeping your keys and moving your car. Let's drive the vehicle for quarter/half a mile from cold and then leave it for a week or a fortnight while the condensation in the exhaust rusts away your exhaust pipes and boxes, and also the inconvenience and delays at either end of your journey. LS and nearer options are overpriced, especially for the quality of the provision. I know we can get 10% off the full asking price with the monthly code. Don't know whether LHR or BHX offers similar 'official' airport discount.

To track the price increases I have looked back at some of my confirmation emails from BRS of parking bookings - all 3 days over the weekend in long stay.
Dec 2006 £16
Jul 2007 £19.99
Nov 2008 £26.99
The increase is way above the inflation rate over the intervening years. I gave up using BRS onsite car parks after that date and used public transport. Inconvenient but cheap!

Anyone else remember the happy days of the old BRS passenger FF loyalty scheme (Navigator?) when you used to swipe your card on a machine after security, and five swipes gave you a free weekend's parking?

Remember the loyalty scheme long gone never to be seen again. This is the problem when share holders want their divi pay out. Years ago it was council owned and ran so hence the cheap car parking.

Car parking at the airport is really a matter of choice, you can take a chance on the off site offerings with the time taken for transfer up to the expense of the multi storey car park. There is also the possibility of using public transport either by bus or taxi.

Over last weekend five of us flew out and back to Malaga, we went out on the Thursday evening Easyjet and returned on the 21:45 Ryanair from Malaga. We wanted as little transfer time as possible so after looking at the options I booked the long stay car park, this cost £55 from 17:00 Thursday until 01:00 Monday morning. I found a parking space in zone D a 4 minute walk from the terminal. This worked out cheaper than a taxi and probably the quickest transfer. The bus was not a consideration due to time and routes. As for the state of the car park, it is only a car park and the surface is adequate for the job.

I've used silver zone in the past as well as taxis and the long stay was by far the quickest and most convenient. You pays your money and takes your choice

Airport press release regarding the official opening of the first multi-storey car park. Work on a second MSCP will begin next year with a target opening date of 2021 and an application for a third MSCP will be included in the airport's planning application to take passenger numbers to 12 mppa.

Council leader officially opens Bristol Airport multi-storey car park

Created: 2nd Jul 2018

Bristol Airport’s first multi-storey car park was officially opened today by the Leader of North Somerset Council.

Councillor Nigel Ashton unveiled a plaque to mark the completion of the £9.5 million development which opened to customers earlier this summer. Situated within a short walking distance of the terminal, the new car park has more than 1,100 spaces across three levels, with two further floors providing an additional 750 spaces to be added over the next winter.

Goldbeck Construction built the steel modular structure which incorporates lighting to make locating an unoccupied bay easier for drivers.

Completion of the multi-storey car park follows improvements elsewhere across the site in the last 12 months, including a £2.5 million customer reception centre in the Silver Zone car park. Work on a second multi-storey car park, featuring a public transport interchange on the top level, will commence next year and is expected to open in 2021, adding nearly 2,000 more spaces. Plans for a third multi-storey car park will be included in a forthcoming planning application to increase the Airport’s passenger numbers to 12 million a year.

Andrew Goodenough, Development Director at Bristol Airport, said:

“Not only does this new car park deliver more high quality facilities for our passengers, it also demonstrates our continued commitment to delivering the comprehensive development plans approved by North Somerset Council in 2011.”

Councillor Nigel Ashton, Leader of North Somerset Council, said:

“I’m delighted that the Airport has yet again shown its commitment to the West Region and North Somerset in particular. Employment and tourism will prosper across the West due to partnership working and the continuous success of our Airport, its management and staff.”

In June, Bristol Airport was named ‘Best Airport in Europe’ in the 5-10 million passengers category at the annual awards dinner held by European airports association, ACI Europe.

A consultation on Bristol Airport’s Master Plan runs until 6 July, considering how the Airport can meet future demand for air travel to and from the South West and South Wales. More information is available at www.bristolairport.co.uk/future.

  • I was reading some minutes of Wrington Parish Council meetings from earlier this year and I noted a report from the local district councillor to the effect that BRS is considering the possibility of a free 'drop-off point' as it is described in the minutes. No further detail was given.

Just received an email from the airport highlighting the 25% discount on MSCP and Meet & Greet rates for Aug-Sept, so I checked the rates for my dates next month. With no discount codes applied, the MSCP is cheaper than Silver Zone!

Has any forum member used the MSCP yet and can advise if there are any 'operational' reasons why it would be unpopular?

One wonders whether the greedy airport management realised their pricing mistakes if take-up of MSCP has been below expectations, or is it a wider issue reported in the press that last minute foreign holiday bookings are allegedly down year on year due to the heatwave here in the UK.

I can't help you with MSCP 'operational'. When we use the airport now we take a taxi but we do live quite close. That's probably not a realistic option for people living much further away.

You mention the apparent national trend of last-minute summer holidays being down because of the weather here. Last week I recieved one of the regular BRS advertising emails and they were pushing Malaga, Dalaman and Florence. Whether that's because bookings are down to those locations I don't know.

Well I've bitten the bullet, cancelled my existing booking (far enough ahead not to incur fees) and rebooked MSCP using SAVE25, netting me a reduction of around 15% on my original booking. The offer email states availability until 30/9 for bookings until 30/9.

Pricing seems quite dynamic, so different dates/durations may not result in savings, but worth a look if you have parking booked already which starts more than 48 hours hence (to avoid cancellation charges).

I have done the same. My 8 days in the MSCP at the end of August was £103. I cancelled it and rebooked using SAVE25 and it now costs me £69. Very happy with that.

well done for getting a parking deal like that. Some people would just sit back and moan at the cost of parking with out doing any research into it.

Presumably your original booking was also taking account of the introductory 25% discount? If so this gives some indication of how much the pricing has dropped, but if not this is more than a 25% reduction - intriguing!
