As always with your data files you have done a great bit of research.

So in a space of 3 hours (starting with Hainan's arrival) we have 10 overseas airlines arriving: Air Transat, American, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Ethihad, Ethiopian, Hainan, Jet Airways, Oman, Qatar, Singapore and United.

Edited to add United.

Not bad for a small regional airport.

If I'd gone a little longer, the font size would have had to be reduced so making it less readable as my monitor size isn't that big! Would be something like 8 more flights to squeeze in.

I think to list all those airlines and then say MAN is a small regional airport is quite a contradiction! ;)

As people have pointed out before, MAN is bigger than some airports serving capital cities across Europe!

Yet MAN is practicially always stated to be a low-yield airport. Which doesn't tally with the airline list and routes on offer. That is the conundrum that some prefer to ignore on other forums. I wonder if the discredited Airport Commission would like to rewrite their report to reflect the realities of how UK aviation is developing and the fractional benefits to regional UK of an expanded LHR compared to the non-wished for regional long-haul expansion which has demonstrably shown what impact long-haul has when placed with the right airline, right destination and right equipment as the status quo of LHR-only ought to have see the same boost to the UK regional economy from the existing flights except it didn't.

Excellent data David. Many thanks.
I think the Davies Commission's report has become progressively less credible as time has gone on. In my view, he over-estimated the benefits of domestic connectivity to LHR for the UK as a whole and in helping to boost more long haul services from LHR. And strangely, didn't he claim that L/H services from the regions produced more carbon emissions?

It's interesting that the new CEO at EDI has criticised Scottish MPs for initially supporting R3 at LHR. He understandably is concerned at the adverse effect it would have on EDI's potential growth of its own services. Davies, as I recall, made no attempt to assess the impact on airports like EDI, GLA and MAN, for example, that already have frequent flights to LHR as well as a good range of services to Europe and beyond.

But the other main error in the report, when comparing the relative merits of LHR and LGW,
was to completely under-estimate LGW's passenger growth.

I do have 1 bit of sympathy for him. Am I right in saying that the original objective of setting up the Commission was to meet capacity demand in the SE. Somewhere along the line, 'retaining the UK's hub status' or words to that effect got
inserted into the final brief.

I'm somewhat surprised that MAN sat on the fence about R3, simply stating the delay before any runway was open presented great opportunities for MAN in the meantime.

Just sat in the garden with a pair of binoculars and FR24, and was wondering why the MAN to Canada market seems to be so poor now?
Lots of aircraft overflying into London and even smaller European cities, like AC, Westjet, Transat, Rouge, BA.
I know we have a few Transat, and Rouge on a very short season, but I remember when I was young it was probably our biggest long haul market, especially in the summer months.
Yes, maybe the expatriate stuff has dropped off over time, but this doesn’t seem to have affected others as much as MAN and its catchment area.
Any thoughts on this? Predictions for future possible routes or increases in frequency etc?

It’s has heavily effected the whole of the UK regional networks.

Days past with Wardair, CP Air, British Airways , Air Canada, Nationair, Worldways, Ontario Air, PWA, British Midland, and others long gone.

Birmingham without service at the moment until Primera start , Newcastle none Exeter none, Leeds none, even Liverpool had occasional Wardair flights .

AIR CANADA have shifted their focus on Alliance Hubs Heathrow and Paris .

Rouge now serve many on the later day VFR routes to Italy Greece Dublin and Central Europe rather than the UK market.

All that said the 7M8 could be the driver to bring Air Canada mainline back into Manchester in the near future imho.

Westjet might also be a possibility when they get the 788 for Gatwick releasing the 763s

I do agree that the Canadian market demand in some what under served right now through.

We once had regular flights to Vancouver , Calgary , Winnipeg, Hamilton, Montreal as well as Toronto !

Would be interesting to make a 1980 v 2018 comparison (but I better do what I'm paid for..). Air Transat seem to have more than a healthy offering, with 4 destinations. A lot of the Wardair stuff allegedly depended on 'mother & daughter' traffic, especially Winnipeg and time has taken its course.

Air Transat fly to Toronto not quite daily high season and Vancouver in summer only . They do offer some connections elsewhere over Toronto rather than direct flight these days.

In winter it’s down to 2 weekly Toronto for the most part .

There has never been much of a winter market ( too cold), BOAC used to do Toronto and Montreal
with a VC10 shared with Prestwick in 70s and 80s which I know was daily in summer but can`t
remember what winter schedule was. I have just looked at a June 1976 timetable and it was
7 BA VC-10 sched 1 B707 CH 3 BCAL B707 CH 1 Laker DC-10 CH and 3 Wardair B707/B747 CH
I think the 1980/90 were the hayday as there were many more flights but quite often combined
with other cities

Just seen a post elsewhere that it was posted on Wikipedia that Thai are starting on 1st December 2018. User001 then confirms they will be starting from MAN but doesn't confirm the date.

On the other forum someone said that it would more than likely be on a 787 8/9 but didn't give a start date.
