The guy is deplorable, shocking and a cancer to the industry.
This will affect his management crednetials and hopefully the board et al will start to oust this guy.

The IAA, CAA, EASA should really be looking into the safety aspects of this airline and i really want the British Government to put substantial pressure on the Irish Government to make the IAA investigate Ryanair from a safety perspective and publish the results - thus affecting his credentials even more.

The pilots on the other hand should stop been generous and gestures of good will. Work to rule - don't do a thing till 45 minutes till departure, ensure every single load sheet is checked to the enth degree etc. I'd also suggest a UK wide 'sickness and fatigue' report day where all pilots report sick or fatigued. That would bring the Ryanair UK network to a halt and would put even more substantial pressure on him.

What really upsets me is that they cannot legally strike like TCX can as they don't have a union. The above is a strike but the above is a cheap strike as such.

Just as a comparison in models; Southwest Pilots contributed to the Herb Kheller retirement funds when he retired.

O Learys problems are escalating.

I've heard elsewhere that the pilots are working to rule as well. With the sad demise of Monarch and the likes of TUI, Jet2, EZY and TCX expanding to fill the void left by them there will be jobs out there. I've seen an advert for TUI UK advertising for pilots all types and unrated as well.

Ryanair's past routes

We sometimes comment on the fact that Ryanair seems to have stagnated at BRS to a degree. New routes do come but the overall progress is not great. I've had a look at Ryanair's activities at BRS in terms of routes tried and then axed.

The context is that in the winter of 2007-2008 Ryanair opened a base at BRS which within a year or two became five aircraft. Prior to the base Ryanair served BRS on three routes for a number of years from other bases, viz Dublin (by far the longest standing), Girona and Shannon.

The below routes have come and gone.

Derry 2007-2008

Dinard 2007-2008, was shown as reinstated in summer 2012 schedule but then withdrawn before season commenced

Grenoble 2008-2009 (winter ski season only), now operated in winter ski season by easyJet

Katowice 2007-2009, 2011-2014, now operated by Wizz Air

Salzburg 2007-2008 (winter ski season only), now operated in winter ski season by easyJet and TUI

Turin 2007-2009 (winter ski season only), now operated in winter ski season by easyJet and TUI

Szczecin (Stettin) 2008-2009, 2013-2014

Shannon 2005-2010

Cagliari* 2009, now operated by bmi regional as summer charter

Eindhoven 2009

Pau 2007-2009

Perpignan* 2009

Montpellier* 2009

Toulon* 2009

Trieste* 2009

Bydgoszcz** 2010

Bratislava 2007-2014

Rimini 2009-2010

Porto 2008-2010, now operated by easyJet

Belfast City 2009-2010

Marrakech 2009-2011, now operated by easyJet but route is shortly to be discontinued

Seville 2009-2011

Riga 2007-2012

Lodz 2012-2013

* routes operated for a single summer (2009) during the height of the recession which is the only year in the past 21 that BRS has seen a fall in annual passenger numbers.

** Bydgoszcz was new for summer 2010 but operated for just two months (May and June) before being axed with load factors of 61% and 71% respectively. Given that Bratislava was axed with regular monthly load factors well into the 90s% perhaps this is no surprise. As aways yield is the key.

In addition to the above, current routes to Budapest, Gdansk and Reus have come and gone in the past, to be reinstated again.

Valencia was switched to Castellon in 2015 and Treviso was switched to Venice MP in 2016

When did Ryanair Ryanair setup their base at BRS?
Base commenced November 2007 although three routes - Dublin, Girona and Shannon - had been operating from other bases before that.

I've compared a week in November 2017 to the same week in 2016 of the Ryanair schedule from all UK airports.

Taking into account the recent cancelling of routes and reduction in flights across the RYR network, Bristol now has the largest increase in flights per week out of all the UK airports RYR serves!

Key:
Airport (RYR bases in bold) / Percentage increase in flights comparing Nov-17 to Nov-16

BRS / 10%
EMA / 10%*
(*This percentage would have been -9% however in November last year EMA's runway closed over the weekends meaning flights were squeezed into the week only. When comparing this year to a date from last year when the runway was reopened and a full schedule returned the percentage change would actually have been -9%)
LBA / 8%
EDI / 5%
STN / 3%

NCL / 3%
CWL / 0%
PIK / 0%
LPL / -3%
MAN / -4%
BHX / -5%
GLA / -6%
BOH / -8%
LTN / -19%

LGW / -32%
LDY / -44%
BFS / -57%
ABZ / NEW (Flights only started operating in 2017)

Summary:
The week I compared in November 2016 - BRS had 69 flights to 19 destinations.
The same week in November 2017 sees RYR operate 76 flights to 20 destinations. The new route is Cologne at 4x weekly, plus a doubling of flights to Venice (from 2x weekly to 4x weekly) and Bucharest (from 1x to 2x weekly).
The extra 7 flights gave it a 10% increase on last year.

For other examples:
STN had 26 extra flights this November, however as it's weekly total went from 1,003 last year to 1,029 this year, that makes it only a 3% increase overall.

BOH lost one flight per week and is down to 11x weekly flights in 2017 from 12x weekly last year giving it a 8% decrease.

CWL keeps the 2x weekly flights to TFS from last year with no changes keeping it at 0%

Another tour de force, Severn. Many thanks again.

Although Ryanair hasn't grown much in summer at BRS in recent years, albeit some routes come and go or are reduced or increased in frequency, its winter programme has certainly shown growth with last winter increasing by 25% and the coming winter by 10%.

Be nice to see some more growth in the summer as well. If two carriers can operate krakow and Venice then so should Rome Madrid and Barcelona shouldn't they ?

BCN is 2 x daily with easyJet in summer and 10 x weekly for most of the winter so there might not be much scope there and Ryanair only operates to its other versions of Barcelona (Girona and Reus) from BRS in the summer, albeit it does serve El Prat from some UK airports. I don't think that Ryanair serves Madrid. easyJet has increased it to daily for most of the year with a slight dropping off in mid winter. There might be scope for an increase there in summer.

Rome is one destination that I'm surprised has not been increased - in summer anyway. It's been daily with easyJet for years and always has very high load factors. I'm sure it could stand extra flights whether by easyJet or someone else, although I guess there might come a point where yield might diminish a bit.

CDG is another that easyJet stubbornly refuses to increase beyond daily although several years ago it did go double daily for a day or two each week. Although bmir now competes with its 2 x daily service easyJet still tends to sell out with tomorrow's and Friday's inbound and Friday's outbound showing as sold out. Probably the yield thing again with CDG if easyJet upped its rotations. Ryanair operates to 'Paris' Beauvais and Vatry. I'm not sure how popular that would be given the CDG flights. Orly might be a useful one though but easyJet doesn't seem to serve the UK from there.

Milan MXP is one that I'm surprised that easyJet has not brought back after a number of years absence. It used to compete daily with Ryanair's daily Bergamo. That now only operates 3 x weekly so there would seem scope for easyJet. bmir's rather niche MXP might bite the dust if easyJet did do back on the MXP.

I'm wondering how well Cologne will do with Ryanair when it starts soon. I always think that beginning such routes in winter and at 4 x weekly can sometimes be a bit of a challenge.

Cologne

Continuing with the comment in the final paragraph of my previous post immediately above, the first CGN rotation took place today. I forgot to check the seat selector to see how well it seemed to have done passenger-wise.

Tomorrow's outbound is still advertising the lowest fare at £34 and currently the seat selector is showing only 102 seats occupied, although occupancy has grown as the evening has progressed and no doubt some more seats will be filled by the time it departs. Not likely to be anywhere near full though.

Wednesday is the next flight after Monday and the lowest fare for that is £118 with nearly two thirds of the seats already shown as occupied. This one is likely to build to at least a respectable level. Friday and Sunday are also showing lowest fares of £119 and the two weeks beyond that vary between £9.99 and £69 depending on the date.

One of my grandsons and two mates are Spurs fans and bought fares at £9.99 each way to watch Spurs play at Dortmund in the European Champions League - flying out on 20 November and back on 22nd with train on to Dortmund.

Early days for this new route of course and load factors, especially with Ryanair, often don't count for a lot with BRS seeing one or two FR routes that had consistently very high loads axed whilst more modestly patronised routes (by Ryanair's standards) such as Knock seem to go on year after year.

I don't intend to make a habit of this but as I missed checking the seat selector load of the first outbound flight on this new route (Cologne) on Sunday and Monday's seemed modest I've checked today's and it's much better. Currently 169 of the 189 seats are shown as occupied which would equate to a load factor of 89.4%. Given the fare price of the last few days was shown as £119 the yield ought to be ok on this flight.

A few more seats will probably be shown as occupied by the morning - they've filled up a bit since teatime. Friday is building well too.

Cologne

I wasn't going to mention the seat selector again for a bit but I've just checked the next outbound which is on Sunday and the flight is already sold out.

Cologne

Unless there is a glitch in the Ryanair booking system Cologne is no longer for sale. Today's flight is showing on the departure board but the next one on Wednesday and thereafter are shown as 'no flights' on the calendar.

This must surely be a record even for Ryanair - axing a new service after just one week in operation. I remember BRS-Bydgoszcz was axed after just two months in operation in 2010 and Dinard was restored in summer 2012 after four years' absence only to be withdrawn before the season actually started.

That is bizzare. Checked the MAN-CGN (due to BRS-CGN and CGN-MAN being launched at the same time) and MAN is still on sale.

Would be crazy to think this route is cut already, but that said, Cologne has always been a wierd route that struggles to work from the regions (MAN and EDI excepted).

It's still on the app but prices are quite low. £9.99 comes up a lot.

Same thing with the daily MAN-CGN re £9.99 fares and that one is still on sale.

If they've axed BRS-CGN Ryanair must be concerned about future bookings at the prices offered. Sunday's outbound was sold out and the flights this week were building in numbers. Today's flight was 85% seats occupied when I looked last night. Probably a few more by the time it left this lunchtime.

My comment of a couple of weeks ago - I'm wondering how well Cologne will do with Ryanair when it starts soon. I always think that beginning such routes in winter and at 4 x weekly can sometimes be a bit of a challenge - might be a prescient one.

Cologne

Is back in the booking engine. Must have been a glitch. How odd.
