The control tower exterior has been given a lick of paint (I think). The brickwork is now dark grey, a similar colour to the tower at Glasgow.

Thanks for the clarification; I thought your post seemed out of context.

BTW, what's with the grey brickwork job ?Weatherproofing or a fiftieth birthday present to the Tower from Bridgepoint ?

Pass. I suppose the exposed 60s brickwork was probably the only bit left of the original building that was visible. Perhaps the grey paint blends in better with the steels and greys of the newer facades on the rest of the building.

I thought any tall building within flight paths range had to be painted in two distinct colours, i.e. orange and white.
I worked on Elvington airfield I know many years ago when under American control and I remember perimeter tall buildings had to be in two distinct colours under their regulations.

The radar displays introduced last year use various shades of grey as their background colour and now the Tower walls are grey too. The staff don't use grey (Astrolite) headsets any more though. Black instead.

MP discusses emission cutting plans at Leeds Bradford Airport
http://www.ilkleygazette.co.uk/news...sion_cutting_plans_at_Leeds_Bradford_Airport/

The article mentions proposals to increase the height of the Leeds airspace from 7,000 to 12,500 feet and new arrival routes which I don't know if that has been mentioned on here before?

"It would also allow for standard arrival routes - currently unavailable to LBA - to be used, increasing the predictability and efficiency of aircraft."

I think, based on what has been said at Consultative meetings, that the intention is for flights coming up from the South in particular to have a straight descent down on to the runway (32) rather than them heading off towards the Pennines, and then coming back over to Leeds again as they often do now. I know some flights do a straight in approach but the majority end up over Derbyshire and the Peak District, which is taking them away from LBA - and then they have to head East again where they usually come into Leeds via the Dewsbury area. I believe that the proposals would mean LBA flights operating over DSA airspace as it was mentioned that DSA are co-operating with proposals, which if implemented would save fuel and flying time. I hope that makes sense. I could be wrong of course, but that is the impression I got at the last meeting. Of course, flights coming up from the Canaries using the Atlantic route and Ireland, or in from North Eastern Europe would not be impacted. I think it is mainly the Mediterranean routes that currently tend to cross over the Channel, the Kent coast and East London that would benefit from flying a direct route to LBA. #flightroutes #LBA

At today's LBA Consultative Committee meeting, LBA management provided a detailed and interesting presentation regarding the Airspace changes proposed for LBA and how these will tie in with National Airspace changes. All airports are now working on this but LBA is ahead of most of them in terms of planning and progress. Local consultations are due next week and of course we have already seen the local press picking up on the subject - the T&A in a positive manner and the YEP in their usual negative manner.

Plans were provided that show the changes in airspace and routings. Although some small areas will see aircraft overflying them more directly than previously, some areas would see overflying aircraft disappear for the most part. A major advantage of the revised plans is that LBA airspace would max out at 12,500 feet instead of the current 7000 feet. This will enable aircraft departing to climb faster and more consistently without the need to throttle back and then climb again. In addition LBA airspace would be larger in size. There would be a jointly operated area of airspace (with DSA) to the South East of Leeds, and similarly a jointly operated area of airspace over the Yorkshire Dales, this time with the Military. To the East of Leeds, would be an area of airspace available to LBA when military flights are not taking place, principally in the early morning and evenings. This would enable flights to routed on to a runway 14 arrival from the East rather than having to cross to the West of the airfield as is usually the case now (although not always).

For arrivals, the intention is that there will be new Standard Terminal Arrival Routes (STARs) and aircraft will be required to arrive at these at specific altitudes, then continue with a continual rate of descent on to the runway, without having to level off or power up engines.

Flight routes off runway 32 via Nelsa would be broadly similar to the present with a left turn through the current gateway between Menston & Burley in Wharfedale (although at greater height) and then routing over towards Lancashire, a fraction to the South of the current routing until Keighley when it goes further to the North than at present. This represents 65% of departures. The other 35% via Dopek/Lamix (eg Amsterdam flights) will turn to the SE quicker than at present, so passing in the vicinity of Baildon rather than to the West of Shipley. Again, flights will be higher as they will be cleared to climb by LBA.

Flights off runway 14 operating via Pole Hill (65%) will, instead of turning West over Leeds, continue to climb directly over Leeds City Centre and will only turn to the South West in the vicinity of Rothwell/Middleton. This new routing will be via Elend. Again, the procedures will allow aircraft to climb more rapidly.

Finally flights off runway 14 operating via Dopek/Lamix (35% & again including the likes of Amsterdam) would route as they do now.

The significant advantage of the new process is that it will modernise the system, integrate with national changes in airspace to be introduced over the next few years (current airspace was sorted out over 40 years ago and is in dire need of re-organisation), and will benefit the environment due to aircraft climbing to greater height more quickly, and when arriving using continuous descent without the need to power up engines at any time. This saves air mileage, fuel, emissions, & reduces costs. On average it was stated that for each departure from LBA up to 100kg of fuel can be saved.

Subject to the completion of the consultation process and submission of plans to/approval by the CAA, the additional airspace would be allocated to LBA from 26 May 2018 but the new procedures would not come into effect until October 2018. This is to ensure all other airports working in partnership with LBA are also ready (includes DSA).

I would strongly suggest that anyone with a particular interest in this attend the consultation evenings to be held at Horsforth and Menston over the next week or so. It is interesting and informative. As with all things some will lose (in terms of being on flight paths) and others will gain, but the greater height achievable will mean an overall reduction in aircraft noise whilst new routes and procedures will reduce fuel consumption and air pollution.
