Another carrier to look out for is IndiGo. They are mulling long haul ops not only from DEL and BOM, but also connecting high flow leisure routes such as Goa, to which Manchester is in the mix for.

Is something changing allowing KU to fly between points other than those starting or ending in Kuwait? The whole Israel thing meant they had to give up their long standing 5th freedoms LHR-JFK. MAN-USA is equally impossible currently.

I agree, and this was why I was sceptical about these transit flights.

I took Monty's post on Airliners.net as the MAN-KWI terminator flights would start first, whilst the ORD/IAD flights would be a way off as they haven't chosen the airport yet.

Because of the fifth freedom debacle, surely any transit flight routing would be KWI-MAN-IAD-KWI, with the terminator (3x weekly flight that has been cited) for the Manchester-Kuwait-Manchester pax.

Quick winter overview

It would appear, on initial viewing, that if all Winter slots were to be used then you would expect an increase in movements of in the region of 100 per day. Having said that we know how Flybe had requested vast numbers of extra slots for Summer 2017, so do not take too much for granted!

Largest operators, in terms of full season movements are:
Flybe
Ryanair
easyJet
Monarch
Thomson
Jet2
Aer Lingus
Thomas Cook

We've all seen the raging rumour going on in the Midlands. Are there any new rumours going on in Manchester?

-Hainan to Guangzhou/Continuation of daily Beijing
-Kuwait Airways Announcement
-Ukraine restoring Kiev
-Thomas Cook to New Orleans/San Diego/Tampa

??

Unless you want a rehash of old rumours / interested airlines I can't think of any.
  • Hainan want Shanghai
  • Thai - who knows where they are.
  • Air Asia X have again shelved European plans.
  • JAL seem to have continually been in discussions about adding capacity to the UK, but have managed to find slots in a "full" LHR.
  • Malaysian are looking to expand, but one would think MAN is not in the current thinking.
  • Vistara are the most likely airline to start Indian services to MAN.
  • Scoot may be close behind Vistara.
  • TCX have huge plans and are focused on Manchester.
  • Perhaps we could see another far eastern carrier - as yet not mentioned on this board.

Yes, it seems these rumours are the same ones that have been going on for a year. Hopefully, Hainan's CAN application can come to something.

Since the announcement of Oman Air and the frequency increases by CX and HU, it has gone rather quiet on the MAN front in terms of long haul. Meanwhile, there is no shortage of guessing, speculation and intrigue on the BHX site.

On the BHX thread, there is often comment on where the Business Development team have been particularly active. I appreciate these guys are active all the time talking to or visiting airlines all over the world, inviting airlines to come and look at an airport, working on data for potential routes, the importance of catchment areas etc, but does anyone know where the focus of the BD team at MAN has been in recent months?

The the MAN RD team have been in various places over the past few months. They have just come back from the US talking to one very particular airline. They have also been to Korea, India, China and Kuwait in the most recent months, as well as the usual catch up trips to Spain, Italy, Germany and France.

The MAN team are not very vocal on either social media or the mainstream media, they keep their cards close to their chests, rumours normally surface once the handling agents get tender requests.

Sometimes you get snippets from airline execs taking trips to the U.K. Europe or sometimes specifically MAN...

These are usually pointed out to me however!!!

In terms of potential long haul routes, we have a few irons in the fire, and I'm aware of at least 6 long haul routes that are in the advanced talks to nearly announced stages.

Just because we aren't hearing anything on the jungle drums doesn't mean nothing is due.

As said, 2018 will be a trying time, and there will be a few bumps along the way, but, we should also see some good growth too.

2017 could finish off at about 27.4-27.5 million, and 2018 about 28.2 million if my sources are correct.

Very interesting User.

Those passenger estimates on the surface seem cautious. I reckon just under 3.5% average monthly increase is required in the remaining 6 months to reach 27.5m by the end of this year (subject to any confusion over terminal and total pax including transit). And 28.2m in 2018 from 27.5m is about 2.5%.

However, I recall Charlie Cornish suggesting numbers could fall to 2% (MAG or MAN?) before picking up again.

Maybe not too surprising if the potential main contributors to more significant growth are now constrained in adding based a/c. apart from any volatility in the general economic climate.

The numbers are being cautious at the moment.

Reality will be that we could actually finish at about 27.9-28.1 this year and 29.1m next year, but, with so many outside factors coming into play, and a very competative market at the moment, means they have to be cautious with the figures and are working on a 'worst case scenario' so that all eventualities are planned into the forecasts.

Plus, from what I've seen, MAN has increased its charges to airlines so this may dampen demand unless they reach out to certain airlines for bespoke deals.

I always under appriciate just how impressive the long haul network is from Manchester. Just look at the Saturday arrivals:

It really is impressive. Perhaps airlines like Air China, Thai can bulk up the evening traffic - maybe even Cathay Pacific, should their Hong Kong route continue as it is? There's also Lahore (PK 772) in the evening.
