Monarch must renew its operating licence this week to continue selling package holidays, the Civil Aviation Authority said.

The company has been hit by rumours that it is in trouble, which have been denied by the firm. But the CAA warned that Monarch's Atol licence expires on Friday and if it is not renewed it will be unable to sell package holidays.

Just posted in the forums...

So it would seem Monarch appear not to be out of the woods yet after an unusual disclosure by the CAA.

A figure of £5 million was mentioned on another web site but I have no idea how well informed that poster was or whether that sort of figure is anywhere near accurate. In some respects £5 million doesn't seem that much for an organisation like Greybull, one might think anyway.

I know it has been posted on other threads, but it is good to hear that Monarch have secured further investment to keep them in the air.
I must admit, I have a vested interest as I (hopefully) will be flying with them early next year.

They have apparently "secured funds to enable them to carry on for at least another 12 months", was what the BBC said this morning.

Like everybody, I'm really pleased the airline has sorted it's finances out for the time being at least anyway.

Financial instability in the UK is not going to do the airline industry as a whole any favours and Monarch in particular are going to find it increasingly difficult during the next twelve months.

Fingers crossed the Pound settles down over the coming weeks as it could have an effect on the number of people looking to travel overseas during 2017.

Although it is good news I think people have to be cautious about it as no one know where Greybull have got the extra money from whether it's a silent investor or a big loan?
Also you have to wonder why convert from airbus to Boeing and add the hassle and cost of completely retraining your crew and pilots and mechanics? Can't see Boeing being that cheaper?
Hopefully Monarch will get stronger and pitch up at airports like CWL where they will have less competition!

Nothing is totally secure in the airline industry. I remember in the early 70's when Court Line went bust, it came out of the blue. There have been many similar instances since eg Swissair, Sabena to name but two.

Until Monarch is bought by a bigger airline/investment group then it will still have a unsecure future. Hopefully enough time will be gained for new or potential investors to buy Monarch and take it forward. Though the Boeing deal might have put potential investors off.

Cautious but certainly for the next 12 months it's looking safe enough to book with. I guess like with any high value purchases, they're best purchased on a credit card for the extra protection provided by the credit card companies.

There was nothing less secure than the twin towers coming down and the subsequent knock-on effect on the aviation industry that followed leading to the demise of Sabena and Swissair.

Hopefully in 12 months time we won't be having this conversation. I think there is a place in the market for Monarch but they may have to establish new bases at other smaller airports. I do wonder if with their new MAX aircraft they might consider low cost transatlantic? But at least they are still around for us to find out!

Monarch claimed top spot in OAG's LCC category with an on time performance of 85.67%. The next UK airline was Jet2 who came fourth.

Well done Monarch (y)

There's been a lot of chat on the dried plum forum about Monarch doing long haul again with 7 to 8 wide body aircraft. Considering they are converting to 737 max and in the face of stiff competition from Jet2 Easyjet and Ryanair how likely do people believe Monarch could turn itself into a low cost long haul carrier?

Can't see it happening myself to be honest. They have to reestablish their brand after last years fiasco before worrying about new business ventures.

I think problem is for is what is their brand?
Are they a low cost airline? A holiday airline? They only fly from 5 airports. Can they compete with Jet2 Ryanair and Easyjet. If they do branch out into long haul it will be familiar territory for them and they might be able to carve out a niche market especially if they expand it into the smaller regional airports.
