That's great news for Southampton and hopefully it'll lead to more in the future!

Interesting that this is in addition to the airline's Geneva-Bournemouth operation that operates 6 x weekly also in the ski season only. Despite this route operating for a number of years the airline hasn't added any more routes from BOH. The same applied on GVA-Leeds-Bradford which has been axed for the coming winter after about six winters of operation.

The airline also operates GVA-Birmingham and BHX-Grenoble in the ski season and in addition operates BHX-Belfast International year round.

So history suggests that SOU-GVA might be a one-off at that airport.

Flybe operates a once-weekly SOU-GVA in the ski season so that will be a test now that it has a bigger fish alongside it on the route.

If easyJet decides to add further GVA routes in the ski season there are a number of airports that could be considered possibilities.

Last Friday Easyjet launched their new Geneva service from Southampton Airport with Eddie the Eagle the special guest to see the flight off.
Ali Gayward, General Manager at easyJet said: “We’re delighted, today’s flight is almost full, and we’ve got lots of dates throughout the season that are showing a huge amount of demand – we’re expecting this to be a really successful flight. We’re starting off with three times a week for the ski season, but if it proves successful, which we expect it to be, then we’ll begin to look at what else we can do in the future.”
Interesting comment by Ali Gayward General Manager at Easyjet, whether she means new services or extra frequencies only time will tell.

It will be a bit odd when busier airports such as BHX and LBA which have a limited non-based easyJet service (had in the case of LBA) have not seen much expansion. Nearby BOH has had an easyJet winter Geneva route for a number of years so to start one 'just down the road' at SOU is also slightly eyebrow-raising.

I wonder if it may be to scoop up any passengers going up to Heathrow? The flight is operated by Easyjet Switzerland so whether it actually leads anything else only time will tell as like you say bigger airports don't have much of an EZY service but the South Coast area does have a decent sized population and isn't exactly poor either.

It might but there is a huge easyJet base at Gatwick. You'd have thought that with its long association with BOH easyJet would have done something there if they wanted to serve the extremely large Bournemouth-Poole/Southampton/Portsmouth conurbation. BOH's runway is more suitable too if easyJet was seriously thinking of significantly increasing their offering for that area.

If they were going to serve the area with more routes in the future then the Ryanair base at BOH might put them off and despite it's shortcomings steer them towards SOU.

Unconfirmed reports on the other forum that Easyjet will operate Southampton to Palma de Mallorca 4 weekly beginning Summer 2019.

I've never been to Bounemouth Airport but I have been to Southampton and know their departure lounge is not the biggest it's not a great place be delayed and soon runs short of space.

If this is true and Easyjet do launch flights then i wonder if the terminal will receive some expansion during the winter as well.

I also wonder if this happens if it could be mean a change of strategy by Easyjet towards the smaller UK airports. By using non based aircraft from EU bases it does mean they could operate small schedules like a 4 weekly PMI without opening up bases that probably woudn't be sustainable.

With talk of EZY expanding at SOU, we may see a carbon copy of the BHX operation with a handful of away based routes to start with and to test appetite, followed by a base of say x 3 A320 in a couple of years time. With the runway extension almost complete and demand from the large Solent conurbation, it could become very successful!

I think one too watch is if Easyjet switches some of the BHX away based routes too BHX based aircraft which could then free up aircraft for Southampton.
